MagnaCut: An American-made supersteel

The Kline represents our first use of MagnaCut, a new EDC-specific powdered metallurgy steel designed to be ultra corrosion resistant and extremely durable. MagnaCut is the product of Larrin Thomas, a self-professed knife nerd and the guy who actually wrote the book on blade steel engineering. He's dedicated his career to the study of blade steels and their properties. Your blade is the heart of your knife, and the properties of blade steels vary widely. Larrin's mission was to create a new EDC steel that would tackle a classic issue: how do you get the corrosion resistance of a stainless steel with the toughness and durability of high carbon steels? MagnaCut was his answer, and we are proud to bring it to the TJB line for the first time with the Kline.

The Best of Both Worlds.

"MagnaCut has the corrosion resistance of stainless steels, but with the performance characteristics of a traditional high-carbon steel."

- Larrin Thomas, MagnaCut creator and author of "Knife Engineering"

DESIGNED TO GET THE JOB DONE

Made in the USA.

We know that for a lot of people buying products made in the USA is important. It's important to us too, and we're making commitments to make more products here in the States. The Kline is our second USA-made knife, and there are more coming in the future. We are proud to produce the Kline domestically, and we'll continue to expand the products that we make close to home. Stay tuned for more USA-made products in 2023.

The TJB Workhorse.

We've listened to a lot of requests for a larger, more full-bodied knife that was designed to do tough jobs that might be outside the scope of a lighter-weight EDC folder. That's where the Kline came from. It's the knife you've been asking us to make: USA-made, MagnaCut blade steel, Micarta scales, an ambidextrous design and a larger form factor. This is a knife that we are really proud of and we know you're going to appreciate it as well. The Kline will be there for you when you need it most.

    The Kline is FANTASTIC!

So let me start by saying I’m a knife collector. 25+ years and $30,000 later… I do know a thing or two about knives. I first bought a Kline in all black( but I just put it in my collection/never carried it). I then purchased a Kline in green micarta and I have to say that honestly…. It’s maybe my most functional and favorite go-to EDC that I currently have in my rotation. I always carry no matter what, a Sebenza 21 along with whatever else I grab with it. I’ve been taking my Kline with me everywhere ( almost like a second Sebenza). It’s a favorite of mine. The knife at first looked somewhat different than what I use/collect…. however, I started to take it with me… but the action WAS a little stiff. It wouldn’t drop shut and flicking it open with the axis lock was a no go many times. I knew it needed to just break in a bit and it has! It flicks open with authority. Drops shut perfectly ( think Benchmade 940). The ergos on this guy are really fantastic as well. I was skeptical with the double thumb lugs and the size/position of the pocket clip. However, I was nicely surprised that the way I hold a knife… there are no hot spots. The micarta is chamfered well and the grip is literally perfect for me and what I need it for. The blade is big and bold in magnacut. Came shaving sharp right out of the box and I haven’t needed to sharpen or strop it at all yet. This thing is a true WORKHORSE! I’m probably going to buy a third one as well! Obviously this knife was designed by people…

    Change of heart?

Just a couple months ago there was a funny subreddit on a knife group talking about The James Brand. No one takes them seriously because. They are chinese made and make really attractive knives but usually with crap steel, especially for the price. Joked as knives for the metro-sexual or urban outdoorsman. However it appears the James brand has manned up and turning over a new leaf? Perhaps now may cater to collectors and true knife enthusiest. Frankly, this knife if amazing. I way to go on the made in USA and the Magancut!

    Best IMO

I love the this knife so much! My first knife from James Brand was the Barnes which is my favorite, but when the Kline came out I knew I had to have it. I love both of these knives so much. I hope to one day buy the gray/silver version of the Barnes. My always edc the Kline though because if it gets scratched it’s not a big deal, but if the Barnes gets scratched I might lose it!!

    The Kline

    Love the knife!

Very nice feel in the hand, lightweight , super sharp, smooth, and easy to operate. I’m also very happy to have a made in the USA product. It’s become my EDC first choice.

    Well done, Craig H.

    Great knife

This is a fantastic knife. I've been collecting knives for over 30 years. We're in a short of folding knife renaissance. Even still, this is a shining example of everything good in a folding knife. Great materials, steel second to none, solid construction, and great fit and finish. A lot of knives with "super steels" lack proper heat treatment. If you have a super steel at hrc 58-60 you're missing the benefits of the steel. This blade is definitely treated correctly. Looking forward to many years of carry.
